It is rather a historical journey as George Orwell did.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/C7sJXBbGwZSMBWs69\">Katha<\/a> is built on the bank of the <\/strong>Irrawaddy, where, on a good water level day, boats operate to Bhamao. You will not have a problem looking for halal food, but you have to ask around :).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1: Train from Naba to Katha<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Traveling by train<\/b> in Myanmar is a slow journey crossing scenic countryside. It costs the same if choosing option 1. Transport has to arrange to pick up at 5:30 am to catch the morning train to Katha.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breakfast in Katha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Arrived in Katha around 9 am<\/b>, I ordered a paratha and tea from the station teahouse. It\u2019s pleasant and picturesque to sit here and look at the railway tracks and the enormous shady tamarind tree on the other side. It turned out to be Katha. When I mentioned the name George Orwell to locals, they pointed me to the <strong>Deputy Commissioner\u2019s house<\/strong>, which has turned out to be a colonial museum today. The lady who lives opposite holds the key to the gate. She politely opened the gate when asked. The staff is friendly, allowing them to walk around. <b>Orwell\u2019s house<\/b>\u00a0is occupied by the Township Police Commander now. They open as early as 6:30 am. Owned by a Chinese family, they offer a few choices of dim sum, omelet, pork, and non-stuffed steamed buns. For vegetarians, I\u2019d go for steamed buns without any stuffing (mantou). Get a seat outside and soak yourself in the sun as locals do.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/mappingaway.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0792-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-670\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Teahouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Farmer&#8217;s Market near the train station<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The farmer&#8217;s market near the train station was delightful to walk around and to exchange smiles with the lady sellers :). The majority of these vegetable sellers were women. They sell locally grown produce, flowers, and sometimes fish. Vegetables and flowers are spread out on plastic sheets on the ground. I had lunch at a local house, on the same lane, where mostly local women patronized. It serves in a buffet style. Otherwise, a bowl of&nbsp;<b>Mohinga<\/b>&nbsp;from the central market stall for lunch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/mappingaway.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0733-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-676\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main Market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main market is set up with shops that sell daily commodities, kitchen utensils, machines, and bamboo baskets. I spent most of my time in the teahouse filling journals. It&#8217;s the best way to end my short trip to Myanmar.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my last day, I wandered around the town. Another way to explore the outskirts of Katha is by renting a bicycle from the Katha hotel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Riverfront<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fishing brings in some income for households near the Irrawaddy River. Ladies sit on a low stool, gutting and cleaning baskets of fish. The wooden houses have naturally aged. The only flight from cities or ferry\/fast boat goes to Bhamao. The ruins of\u00a0 Sampanago, the ancient Shan Kingdom, can still be seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fast boat looks like it operates every day from Katha to Bhamao at 9 am and to Mandalay at 5 am.
