Vadodara is the third-largest city in Gujarat. Its former name was Baroda. Vadodara was an Indian state ruled by the Gaekwad Dynasty for 200 years. Hired an autorickshaw to take me to <strong>Arudh Mahal Homestay<\/strong>. An overnight bus is the best option to catch up on some sleep and arrive in the early morning. <strong>Sahjanand Travels<\/strong> and <strong>Patel Travels<\/strong> are recommended by Gujarat Tourism. If you travel on a budget, the state transport buses are an alternative to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Train<\/strong>s leave daily, and weekly travel between Ahmedabad and Vadodara. The Bhuj Ac SF Express is the fastest train to pass by Vadodara in the early morning at 4:50 am and reaches Bhuj at 13:15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IRCTC is the Indian Railway Corporation<\/strong>. I explored the bustling <strong>Nava Bazar<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Raopura Tower, <\/strong>which are on the same street, about one kilometer away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nava Bazaar\u00a0<\/strong>is just a small part of the <strong>commercial hub<\/strong> that revolves around the Shiva Statue lake and stretches to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/oThQzf4Q21Ajrpfu7\">Mandvi Gate<\/a>. Kanherao Market<\/strong> is at the opposite end of the lake. Built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 in the Indo-Saracenic revival style, the lavish palace begins the tour at the lawn and offers a good view of the palace. Take the audio guide!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lunch at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/MAjmQErjsZ2wHFj16\">Mandap<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 for a Gujarati Thali. Lehripura Gate is considered the most embellished gate, with elaborated balconies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Book an Ola (India&#8217;s Uber) or an Auto rickshaw to any of the gates to begin your old city tour.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mappingaway.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_2955-e1587360805561.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/mappingaway.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_2955-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-944\" style=\"width:768px;height:512px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I began my tour from <strong>Mandvi Gate<\/strong>, which is not a gate, but rather a pavilion. On my visit, the gate served the purpose of a prayer hall. Statue of gods on the pooja mandir, \u201cprayer cupboard,&#8221; devotees circled, waiting for their turn to pray. <strong>Mandvi Market<\/strong> is a place for traditional leather footwear, those found in Bandra, Mumbai, at a much lower price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that the <strong>Jama Masjid <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/B8nuRHfLNiJEj3Ce8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong>used to host <strong>Asia\u2019s biggest Quran<\/strong>, written by the saint Mohammed Ghauz in the 18th century, but it has been transferred to Darul Uloom Seminary. The Masjid is tucked in the row of shops in an alley that could easily be missed, yet the decorative Islamic carving on the entrance gate might make you look back twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heritage Walks:&nbsp;Open&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/vadodarabyfoot.com\/\">vadodarabyfoot.com<\/a>&nbsp;on your phone, follow the recommended routes. If you are in the Khanderao Market area, walk 650 meters to\u00a0<strong>S<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/i5VxkwXkUnvNM7hCA\">hri Guruprasad Restaurant<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for Jamun ice cream (seasonal) and stuffing dosa. Visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/KkiGLkUUMoRnDwmJ7\">Jay Mahakali Sev Usal<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for some signature snacks, sevsal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Days in Vadodara?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tambekar Wada<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dqxeNUCNKwjLdf5UA\"><\/a> <\/strong>is a three-story building in a wada style (North Karnataka and some parts of Maharashtra) built around the 19th century. The Wada preserves some of the colorful story panels painted in various styles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jews were hired as soldiers by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III since 1850. A historical graveyard is known as Yehudi Kabristan in Nizampura<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/fTN59SuMMje3sQC96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Ruins are scattered around the area. Take an autorickshaw if you did not come with a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get to Champaner and Around?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Champaner Archaeological Park <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/n2crmfPmQpv9mqJ49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong>can be explored on foot or by public transportation. I took a public bus from\u00a0Vadodara&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/jKDcboLqJyxnHYgF8\">Central Bus Station<\/a><strong>.<\/strong> <strong>I took the bus that leaves around 7:30 am and arrived at 9 am.<\/strong> It\u2019s better to arrive early to beat the heat, and it&#8217;s a long day to be here.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Champaner, I used a shared auto-rickshaw service to hop around the sites. Only one main road, so it is convenient to hop on and off the rickshaw.<\/strong> I finished the tour at 3:30 pm and returned to Vadodara at 5 pm to catch the bus to Bhuj.<a href=\"https:\/\/mappingaway.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_3160-e1587362439500.jpg\"><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Car<\/strong>:\u00a0It would be a hassle-free trip to Champaner if you hire a car or drive your own.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bus<\/strong>: If you are a budget traveler, public transportation is the best option. The bus leaves every half an hour from Vadodara Central Bus Station to Champaner. The ST (State Transport) Bus to Pavagadh takes about 1.5 hours. Many pilgrims come to the <strong>Mahakalika Mata Temple<\/strong>. Booking is not required. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to get around\u00a0in Champaner is to walk to the major sites and the only village. Otherwise, an auto-rickshaw is the only option available for sharing or hire to Halol.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to Eat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Halol, the major town, is about 7 kilometers from the archaeological park. Small eateries and tea shops are around the bus stop and in the village. It\u2019s recommended to bring your water and snacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to See in Champaner?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mahakali Mata Mandir<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9:30 am, I was halfway up to the temple along with a small crowd. The temple hosts the goddess Kalika. It is about <strong>5 kilometers from the bus stop at Pavagadh<\/strong>. Hop on shared transportation with the pilgrims who go to the Pavagadh Fort&#8217;s Entry point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climb up or take the ropeway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way up the hill, donkey caravans are coming on your way to deliver goods to temple stalls. Vendors sell prayer goods and mangos.
