It is a 10-hour train journey from Mandalay to Myitkyina. The journey is not always comfortable. On the positive side, the scenic countryside and towns of Myanmar are worth the long train journey.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Restrictions are still imposed on foreigners to visit many areas in Kachin State. Currently, foreigners are not permitted to <\/strong><\/strong>travel to Myitkyina by boat. So far, Putao, Myitkyina, Hopin, and Indawgyi Natural Lake are open to foreigners. The road beyond Myitkyina goes no farther than Irrawaddy Confluence. Putao is the farthest city you can reach, but you need to travel by air.<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Kachin <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kachin state shares a long stretch of <\/strong>border with China and a short border with Arunachal Pradesh, India. A Kachin town named Hpakant, near the Chin border, produces the highest quality jade. The natural resource is a curse to this land. It incited and financed a decades-old conflict between the military and the Kachin Independent Army. Open fire persisted, especially in areas bordering China. Given the situation, many areas are restricted to tourists or checkpoints set out outside of the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The northernmost state is home to 12 subtribes under the umbrella of the “Kachin” ethnic. The majority of the population is identified as Christian. They abandoned the animist belief system and adopted Christianity in the 19th century. It was the British and American Christian missionaries who spread the message of God to the Kachin since the 1860s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Myitkyina safe to travel to?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Myitkyina is a tourist-friendly city for independent travelers. Only Myikyina, Putao, and Indawgyi Natural Lake are on the list of safe destinations for foreigners to visit. The crime level is unknown in the city. Drug addiction is one of the main issues in Kachin state and is prevalent in mining settlements. Anyway, I felt safe walking in town around 6 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best time to visit <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

October to March<\/strong> is the dry winter, considered the best time to visit. Noon in Bagan and Mandalay is hot.
March to May is the summer season.
Monsoon season begins in May, lasts till August, and even in October, light rainfalls in the central and southern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train arrived at 11 am<\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0The<\/strong><\/span> vibes of the train station,<\/strong> combined with a pleasant January weather, made Myitkyina seem like a nice small town to linger around. I walked into Hotel United and the YMCA to check availability and price. Many new hotels operated by Chinese-Burmese rapidly grow to meet the local demand in the capital of Kachin.\u00a0There is not much sightseeing to do in Myitkyina compared to Mandalay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breakfast <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the early morning, the YMCA neighborhood is still sleeping, with no shops open and few people walking on the street. I had breakfast in\u00a0the Morning cafe<\/a> or at a small tea shop opposite from Shree Ramjanki Temple<\/a> <\/strong>.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore Sikh and Hindu Temples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A small community of Sikhs owns shops along the Irrawaddy River. The only Sikh Temple in town, painted with gold domes and white walls, symbolically represents the flourishing of the community. It\u2019s a place of identity that holds the community together, the same for Sri Jagannath Temple, Shree Ramjanki Temple,<\/b> and Dragon Chinese Myanmar Temple<\/b> in the neighborhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walk to the Riverfront <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The city is <\/strong>built on the west bank of the Irrawaddy River. I enjoyed the walk to\u00a0the riverfront and watched life along the waterbank. A boat crosses the Irrawaddy, wakes up the tranquil river. It\u2019s waiting for the monsoon. Tumbledown-bamboo houses and small-scale corn farms are on the riverbank.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walk down to the\u00a0Summer House\"\"<\/a> <\/strong><\/b>for a late Burmese lunch and the river view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Late evening,<\/strong> locals flocked to the farmer’s market for supper shopping.<\/strong> It\u2019s outside of the Myitkyina Central Market.<\/strong> I got an eye on purple boiled corn and local snacks like koh pu\u00f2. The friendlier locals even shared food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irrawaddy Confluence\u200b<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The confluence is 46 km from Myitkyina<\/strong>, about a 1-hour 20-minute drive.\u00a0Irrawaddy Confluence\u00a0is where the Mali Kha and the N Mai Kah meet.\u00a0A dam project signed by the former military regime and a Chinese construction company has been put on hold as a result of local and popular opposition. The villagers were relocated to a new village about 10 km away. Since the dam construction is on hold, it does not seem like they would move back. About ten Fishermen cast fishing nets into the river and wait for their harvest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boats are available for hire. After your sightseeing, stop by any restaurant for grilled fish, which is the most popular here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Th<\/strong>e ride to the confluence is very interesting in itself, with sightseeing of villages, churches, and farming activities<\/b>. On the way, Kachin Theological College & Seminary is an interesting institute to visit and understand students\u2019 lives and education in Northeastern Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n

How to visit the Irrawaddy Confluence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You have to arrange a car. It costs about $50 for the whole trip, including driver and car. The guesthouse would have a contact for drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to go after Myitkyina?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I<\/b>ndawgyi Natural Lake<\/a> <\/b>3rd largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, is about\u00a0 180km from Myitkyina.\u00a0
Transport: Take a train to\u00a0Hopin<\/a> and a one-hour drive to the lake.\u00a0
Stay: Indaw Mahar Guesthouse, in the village of Lon Ton, is the only village where foreigners can stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
